About Prairie Biotic Research

Prairie Biotic Research, Inc. is an all-volunteer non-profit created to fund prairie research projects. In addition to a small board of directors, many other volunteers with specific scientific knowledge give of their time in an advisory capacity. Learn something about each of our advisors.

  • Funding for basic, field biological research has largely disappeared, as have our prairies.
  • Basic biotic research, an important aspect of prairie conservation, is the sole focus of PBR.
  • Individuals are free to conduct research that is poorly supported by existing institutions.
  • Publication, presentation at professional meetings, and vouchering data with specimens donated to institutional collections are strongly encouraged.

Process & Values

Our Foundation & Business Donors

Thank you for letting me know my donation arrived. When I first learned about PBR from you and saw its motto (“We foster curiosity”), and then read about PBR’s activities, I was impressed and wanted to do what I could to help. I am fortunate that I am in a position now to do so. It’s very personal to me – I am not out there in the field myself but I can imagine what it is like and so I experience the process of discovery vicariously … had I directed my life differently when I was young, I believe I would have been a research scientist (my majors were biology and geology). Perhaps I’m sharing too much, but I want to explain where my lifelong interest in learning about the natural world came from and why I am drawn to PBR. -- Connie Beroza

Process and Values

We support basic field biological research on all taxa in U.S. prairies and savannas, but we are especially eager to support research on taxa for which funding is scarce, such as insects, fungi, reptiles, spiders, etc. We don't fund many bird projects, in part because there are generally more funds available for the study of birds.
